Hyde Park Barracks Museum

Sydney

Sydney, Australia

Making one of Australia's most significant heritage buildings accessible required a careful balance between contemporary intervention and heritage conservation. The project introduced lift access to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Museum, allowing access to the upper levels for the first time.

Following extensive heritage investigations and feasibility studies, the lift was carefully integrated within the existing building to not impact on any heritage elements while preserving the historic circulation and spatial character. The bespoke steel lift structure was designed to appear as a lightweight intervention, delicately inserted within the historic fabric rather than competing with it.

Completed whilst Project Architect at JPW.
